“Portraits of Legacy” is a call to remember, to honor, and to rise—motivated by the persistent feeling that something within our time, our history, and our humanity demands a response. This work stands as a tribute to the resilience of women who choose to become beacons of hope, carrying light through generations marked by struggle, perseverance, faith, and transformation.

By weaving together the faces of women known and unknown, this piece creates a rich visual tapestry that honors the legacies they carried forward—whether intentionally or through the quiet power of their daily lives. Each portrait becomes a reflection of endurance, dignity, and spiritual strength, revealing the deep cultural and ancestral connections that continue to shape and sustain modern Black women today.

Through delicate rice paper, layered collage materials, transparent oils, luminous gold leaf, and the enduring presence of encaustic paint, I sought to mirror the complexity and beauty of legacy itself. The translucent layers speak to memory and history—how generations overlap, echo, and remain present within us. Gold leaf becomes a symbol of sacred worth, illuminating stories too often overlooked while celebrating the divine value woven into every life.

“Portraits of Legacy” is more than a reflection of the past; it is an invitation to action. It calls viewers to recognize the strength inherited from those who came before us, to honor the voices and sacrifices that paved the way, and to become carriers of hope for future generations. In a world longing for healing, justice, and connection, this work reminds us that legacy is not only what we inherit—it is what we choose to embody, protect, and pass forward.
