In creating “Legacy,” as an extension of my "One Heartbeat" Series, I sought to capture the essence of Alissa—her identity as a wanderer and the deep-rooted history of the Phoenicians. The decision to highlight their remarkable contributions as seafarers, traders, and craftsmen provided a vibrant backdrop for this artwork, infusing it with both historical significance and personal meaning. Using encaustic paint, oil sticks, pan pastels, and collage, I crafted a layered foundation that symbolizes not just the permanence of the Phoenicians' contributions, but also pays tribute to their spirit of innovation. As I combined these diverse materials, I felt a strong connection to the various cultures and styles they encountered across the Mediterranean, mirroring their legacy of creativity and adaptability. When it came to enlarging and printing Alissa on rice paper, I knew it would add a poignant touch. This choice emphasizes the delicacy and fleeting nature of life while juxtaposing beautifully with the strong, enduring layers of encaustic. This interplay between fragility and permanence reflects the duality of the human experience—celebrating the vibrancy of living fully in each moment while acknowledging the lasting impact we create. As viewers engage with “Legacy,” I hope they find themselves reflecting on the interconnectedness of culture, history, and personal stories. My intention was not only to honor the Phoenicians but also to spark a broader contemplation of how we all contribute to the rich tapestry of life, leaving behind legacies that connect our past with our future. This thoughtful approach guides my work, infusing it with themes of exploration, creativity, and the enduring nature of human endeavors, inviting a deeper resonance with all who encounter it.
