I call this painting "Pilgrimage", one definition is a journey, especially a long one, made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion.
How to share an intimate relationship? One that you are still trying to understand and yet feels totally understood. The mystery of being totally seen, loved, cared for in ways beyond imagination. Like a child, that is how I feel and see myself. So many wonders that are in place without my knowledge or assistance. Even when I think I understand, my understanding is colored by my experiences, perspectives, cultures, family values and wounds. This painting represents the outer layer of my journey and comprehension of my Lord Jesus’s love and work of the cross.
The cross paraphrased from “The Crucifixion” by Fleming Rutledge - Many religions have similar traits but the gospel of Jesus who could have imagined. To announce God our maker in an itinerant Jewish teacher who was nailed to a cross in between two condemned criminals. Caste off by the elites, common folk and his scruffy disciples was a peculiar way to the beginning for a world-transforming faith. Yet this is not only the beginning this is the continue pillar that keeps my/believers’ faith alive.
This painting like all my paintings that I sense God is asking me to paint with Him have many paint overs. With each item drawn, or scene sketched, or thought explored it is like a one-on-one conversation of just lingering and being as we create together. Like my relationship with Him I believe it’s the journey with all its ups, downs, setbacks, and victories that transform and sanctify my heart and grow my trust and love for Him. The call to follow is not so much as a destination but a lifelong lesson of trusting, surrendering, and believing I’m never alone. Painting is not only seeing what is but the possibilities of what will come. It’s making a personal visual reminder of my faith that God is in the process of restoring humanity to Himself. He pursues us all in spite of, and despite ourselves!
The word of God says, "And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart." Ezekiel 36:26. So, this sacred place to me is not one of a physical place but a heart place.
